My friend had a freak accident and has thousands of dollars worth of medical bills to pay off. He does not have medical insurance, so I was trying to figure out how to generally set up a fundraiser/benefit. Thank You in advance for your response. This means a lot to me.

People will tend to help when someone needs a treatment that insurance will not cover. They tend to not help when someone does not have insurance. Bankruptcy is probably the answer if he can not pay his bills.
Anyway… contact a local fire department and see if they will allow a benefit there (or find a restaurant to donate space). Contact a local band to play (ask them to cut you a brake or do it for free). Go to business and put in donation cans with information on the upcoming benefit you planned.
