How do I get started on a fundraiser?

LizaChristine asked:
A local woman who works closely with children (mine included) is very ill, and very uninsured. $15000-$20000 needs to be raised to ensure that she can have the surgery to save her life. What is the best way to get a fundraiser started, and which fundraising avenue will be the best? I’m thinking we can do several together, but we need to do something and fast. Help!

The fastest and most effective way to raise money is to walk up to people, tell them how much you want them to give and what for. Then you put out your hand and wait. Get the best sales people who care about these folks to do the asking–they’re used to asking for money, can be persuasive, and don’t take rejection personally–especially if they get the money in the end.
Most of us don’t need any baked goods, feel better about having our cars washed at businesses (where they recycle the water) and would be happier to be left alone than to have to go to some place, listen to a sob story, and eat outside in the heat. Offer to take people off the “helper” list if they donate $20-$50. Many will jump at it because their time is valuable, esp. if you’re in a long-commute area.
Get a church to “front” for the rund-raising so the whole business can be tax deductible for those who make enough to take advantage of deductions.
Once you get the money raised, find a candidate, John Edwards and Dennis Kucinich leap to mind, who’ll deal with the millions of decent, hard-working people like this lady who are uninsured, and work hard to get him/her/it elected. This is no way to be a society. If you die because you’re poor, the promise about the “right to life, liberty, etc” rings hollow.
There are a ton of things you can do and there are a fewe that are quite popular for raising money for medical expenses including the following:
Bowling
Car Wash
Skating
Fish Fry/Spaghetti Dinners/BBQ Grill Off
Movie Marathon
Church Support (offering specifically for her)
Support from a fraternity/sorrority, school or business in the community
Letters to Recent Lottery Winners (they are used to it and you might get lucky)
Call around to see if a local business offers a day when they will allow all profits or partial profits to go toward a cause-there are grocery stores, restaurants (Uno grille/Elias Bros-Big Boys & others)
I hope this helps!
If you tell the true story most people are willing to donate. Ask for donation and not sell goods or services under the pretext of donation.
I can’t post any info on here because of the community guidelines, but if you email I will email you some free info and get started right away.
Hope this helps!
